Company description: VTT is a large internationally networked R&D centre for applied research in Northern Europe, harnessing high technology to develop scientific solutions for sustainable development and creating new business opportunities. SONE (Solutions for natural resources and environment) business area aims to be one of the global key players in the fields of cleantech and bioeconomy. The main target is to develop innovations for industrial ecosystems to support the utilization of natural resources. Process technology and environmental engineering, industrial biotechnology, biofuel and bioenergy concepts as well as biomass and food processing technologies are the core research focus areas. The research is supported by unique lab and pilot infrastructure.
Role in the project: VTT is mainly involved in WP1 and WP2, considering its deep knowledge and long experience in technologies for recycling and recovery of valuables from organic, mineral and metal containing wastes, including mining waste, slags, ashes, municipal solid waste and wastewater. The competence areas include mapping and characterisation of waste, mechanical, optical and hydrometallurgical separation methods, process and reaction modelling as well as sustainability and risk analysis methods.
